The joint trek promotes the bands' respective 2017 projects. Last year, Mastodon released their seventh LP, Emperor of Sand, and a follow-up EP, Cold Dark Place, featuring a new song, "Toe to Toes," and three leftover tracks from the sessions of 2014's Once More 'Round the Sun. Mastodon’s track “Sultan’s Curse”, from Emperor of Sand received the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in January.

Primus issued their ninth album, The Desaturating Seven, a concept record themed around the Italian author Ul de Rico's 1978 children's book, The Rainbow Goblins. That LP marked the first album of original material from the acclaimed line-up featuring bassist-singer Les Claypool, guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander.

San Francisco rock legends Primus are pleased to release The Desaturating Seven, their first original studio album in six years, out now via ATO Records. Described as “an ever-mutating epic filled with marching rhythms, jarring tempo shifts and a prog-funk groove (cleverly set in 7/8) that recalls early Eighties King Crimson” by Rolling Stone, it’s available now on rainbow splatter vinyl, CD, download or streaming – GET IT NOW.

This is the first studio album of original material since 1995’s Tales From The Punchbowl with the classic Primus line-up of Les Claypool (vocals, bass), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums). The Desaturating Seven is inspired by a 1970’s children’s book Claypool often read to his kids when they were growing up. The book tells a story of seven goblins – one representing each color of the rainbow – who simultaneously pull the color out of the world.

“Many years ago when my children were little kidlets scurrying around the place wreaking havoc and whatnot till it was time for bed and book time, my wife turned them on to a book called “The Rainbow Goblins” by Ul De Rico,” Claypool explained. “The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, ‘this would make good fodder for a piece of music.’ The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”

Mastodon

After sonic journeys inspired by fire, water, earth, air, and the cycles of life, GRAMMY® Award-nominated hard rock band Mastodon ponder the nature of time on their eighth full-length album, Emperor Of Sand, on Reprise Records set for release spring of 2017. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the Atlanta, GA quartet—Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Brent Hinds (guitar/vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar) and Brann Dailor (drums/vocals), and conjure the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass.

Since forming back in 2000, Mastodon have certainly made the most of their time. Most recently, their 2014 seventh offering Once More ‘Round The Sun bowed at #6 on the Billboard Top 200, marking their highest chart entry to date and second consecutive Top 10 debut following 2011’s The Hunter. Casting a shadow over pop culture, they received “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” GRAMMY® Award nominations in 2007, 2014 and again in 2015. Their music blasted through the Academy® Award-winning comedy The Big Short, animated blockbuster Monsters University, and sci-fi western Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin—for which the group composed the score. After contributing “White Walker” to HBO’s Catch The Throne, Vol.2 mixtape, Dailor, Hinds, and Kelliher appeared as “Wildlings” in a popular episode of Game of Thrones Season 5.

Not only did they earn the appreciation of Time, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Billboard, and more, but they also turned many peers into fans, including Metallica, Pearl Jam, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, CeeLo Green, and Feist, to name a few. Performing everywhere from Coachella and Bonnaroo to Download and Sonisphere and nearly every major festival, they’ve headlined legendary venues such as Red Rocks and sold out shows around the globe. Emperor of Sand siphons raw emotion through the framework of an immersive story and intricate musicianship, digging to the core of what defines Mastodon and all timeless rock ‘n’ roll.
