“Look at All The People Here Tonight,” those were David Lee Roth’s first words as he confidently strode onto the Chumash Grandstand Arena at The California Mid State Fair. Gone is the long hair and spandex, but the singer has transformed into a suave & sophisticated Rocker with style, all the while keeping all his charm, quick wit and charisma. Diamond Dave’s infectious smile was prominent throughout the show and if there were any concerns or doubt about the singer’s voice, those were put to rest as the first words of the opener “Panama” rang out. “Are we Having Fun!?,” the singer asked early and often, as if there was any question those in attendance could not have a great time listening to classic Van Halen songs all night, which Roth and his band pulled off true to the original versions while adding their own flair at the same time. The night started with a Bombastic trifecta of “Panama,” “Drop Dead Legs,” and “I’m The One.”

The ever-smiling Diamond Dave, now 70, wore all black - and was backed by an extremely capable band that included guitarist Al Estrada, who duplicated the Van Halen solos & squeals effectively and four male background singers who filled the background vocals reminiscent of Michael Anthony

Roth kept the talking to a minimum as the Band tore through Van Halen classics, “Runnin with The Devil,” “Romeo Delight,” and “Mean Street” Roth then paid a tribute to his friend Ozzy Osbourne who passed away earlier in the day. (Van Halen & Black Sabbath toured together in 1979 )

Roth proved this night that he is still a master of ceremonies as well as a performer that has avoided being a caricature of his old self and any concert goer should put him on their list to see.
